Tales of the Mystery Cafe

Edit 13/11/2011: I love the concept of the Mystery Cafe. This post was one of the first I added to the blog and was very popular then.  The number of visitors to this blog have improved since then and I'd like to post it again to see the response. Please let me know what you think of this...

Most restaurants aren’t the most exciting places in the world – are they? Some can be. But most seem to copy each other, even the menus are similar.

But while browsing the net, I came across Cabel’s Blog. On his trip to Japan while in the town of Kashiwa he experienced something truly unique. And I'd like to tell you about it...

While waiting for a business partner to arrive, he got approached by a cashier of a cafe and was asked to “please...buy something.” This seemed odd but he agreed, got up and purchased an orange juice. A few minutes later his order arrived but to his surprise, he didn’t get his orange juice. He didn’t even get juice. In front of him were an Appletizer and a “weird” candy-bar. He was quite certain that this wasn’t his order and went to approach the cashier. In broken English the cashier explained:

At this cafe, you get what the person before you ordered. The next person gets what you ordered.

Welcome to the Ogori cafe!

This concept is epic! How often do you find yourself in the same old restaurant ordering the same old dish – the one you have ordered a thousand times before! Now you can get to try something that you might not normally have ordered. I just love the entire concept. Also, what you want to buy for the next person is entirely up to you!

Of course, Cabel had one last thing to do. He ordered a little bit of everything: some ice cream, a few snacks and drinks. And then he left with a smile on his face. His one good deed for the day!

I wonder if this would work in South Africa?

I'd just get the cheapest thing available like a Chappie and hope for the best. :) Wouldnt work here in South Africa. No Way!! Too many ppl would complain about not getting their money's worth!
what if? By Unknown on Feb 17 2010 at 7:57 PM
What if they only had a small menu and everything costs the same. That would solve the problem!

This place is definitely for those risk lovers amongst us. I don't think that this place would make for a good first date if you had a date who was a bit fussy, imagine. Ha ha
Interesting but... By Unknown on Feb 17 2010 at 10:13 PM
The person in front of me does not know anything about me. What about allergies? That could become a problem. Lots of negative publicity if customers start dieing.

that's the best, freshes and most inspiring idea i've heard in a LOOOOONG time:) i think keeping the same price is awsome and maybe the orders should come in combos, like a coke and burger so that you don't just end up with a drink for lunch!

Thanx for sharing! Don't know if I would go to a place like that. I will rather stick to my routine but its a nice idea!

i think that is a totally mad idea!! i love it.i think that makes you more open minded and experimental...instead of being boring and habitual.as to whether it would work in south africa...thats difficult. saffers are quite cynical and frugal so they'd be worried about what they'd get instead of enjoying the uncertainty of it. i'd support it 100% if anyone was brave enough to try it.there woudl definitely ahve to be a minimum spend involved.as to allergies, items should be available in teh allergy tolerant option for those specific circumstances.

Awesome idea! I would definitely try it, just for fun. If I'm happy I'll go back.

Downside is..... someone nasty might order the worst combo ever..and you'll be stuck with it! So set combos, tried and tested would be good

All one price is good. Allergy sufferers should try another place.
