& Union - Cape Town Restaurant

Brad Armitage and Rui Esteves, the lads that brought European café culture to the pavements and shopping malls of South Africa in the form of Vida e Caffé, and introduced the concept of luxury beers in the Collective São Gabriel range, have unveiled their latest venture, &Union: a shrine to hand-crafted, artisan beers.

The team have added the Brewers & Union range to their portfolio- three styles of beer that date back to the middle ages. Long maturation gives these unpasteurized, unfiltered beers a distinctive flavor and mouthfeel, in contrast to the bright and bland, modern mass-market lagers of the large, industrial brewers.

&Union offers few, but worthy, companions to their beers: artisan cheeses, prego rolls and a spread of charcuterie from local farmers.

The cornerstone of the St Stephen's Church redevelopment on Cape Town's Bree Street, the &Union space occupies a section of the cellar in one of the cities oldest existing churches. The bar is small, with snug seating for about 35, and communal tables outside to take in the Cape Town summers. Steel stools, marble counters with brass detail, and pendant lights punctuating a sea of dark wood overhead.

More 'Beer Salon' than bar, &Union is a celebration of pairing finely produced foods and their consummate counterpoints from a range of distinctly brewed beers. Hand-selected and succinct. Stripped of all the usual trappings cluttering the search for a great brew, the selection is focussed and edited, ensuring customers have nothing more to worry about than savouring the moment.
