I sadly write this about a restaurant I used to hold in high esteem, until tonight.
For the past 18 months I visited Zorba’s monthly after work in the week, sat in a quiet corner, had a good meal & some wine, while working on my laptop. Mr.Zorba the owner mostly avoided me and when he did say hello, he would ask me why I was alone – which frankly, was my business.
Tonight, out of the blue, he came to me and said people were asking him if this was a computer training centre. He said it was not natural to work on the computer for 2 hours and have drinks. I said I always had a full meal. He stated that even though I was spending money there, I should not think I was doing him any favours. He then put up his hand, and said 'I won’t talk to you anymore’.
I happen to have enough confidence to dine on my own. But a woman enjoying a quiet working meal alone is not welcome at Zorbas. All well, as he reserves the ‘right of admission’. But then put up a sign so people don’t waste their money. Mr. Zorba took away a little of my dignity tonight, but just for a brief moment. Most of all, he did a great disservice to his top-calibre staff, whom I hope are treated with more dignity.
The food is great, the quality of service exellent - but I will not visit a restaurant that makes be feel so unwelcome, and singled out.
