FoodBlog – Cape Town Restaurants: Mr Chan
Mr Chan got recommended to my family when we first arrived in Cape Town and now I am recommending it to everyone who reads this. Mr Chan is definitely the best Chinese restaurant in Cape Town. Over all the years, the restaurant has never disappointed. It is situated on Main Road in Seapoint and is part of the Sea Point City Improvement District. Parking is always available and safe.
Mr Chan‘s menu is extensive: it includes chicken, beef & seafood and also caters for vegetarian dishes. Their starters and desserts are also a delight. You should definitely try out some of these dishes :
- Starter: Won Ton Soup
- Main: Chicken Cashew, Orange Duckling, and Shredded Beaf Cantonese Style
They are all amazing meals. The one thing that kind of ticks me off about Chinese restaurants is that you always have to order noodles or rice separately. It should be part of the meal. Any other restaurant wouldn’t just give you a steak and then charge you extra for potatoes and vegetables. An average meal costs around R90 - R100 and it is well worth it.
Mr Chan is a popular restaurant in Cape Town, so make sure you make a booking before you arrive – especially on weekends. People always say you know the food must be good, if locals go to that restaurant a lot.The same could actually be said of Mr Chan. Around 7 pm busses start arriving at the doors and Asian tourists start entering the restaurant. Now, if these tourists come to Cape Town and have their dinner at Mr Chan, then you know the food must be good.
Directions to Mr Chan:

7 million sharks killed every year
I read somewhere that this restuarant is selling shark fin soup? This is unnacceptable. I love chinese food, but cannot support anyone who sells shark fin soup. Our sharks are our responsibility, they are being wiped out for their fins, I would support Mr Chans if they did'nt sell shark fin soup

The best, by a longshot
Mr Chan is definitely the best place in Cape Town for good tasting Chinese cuisine. Nowhere else comes close.

delicious food, I loved it!
My recommendation is to order their stir fried lobster and noodle, kung bo chicken, beef chow fun, and steamed white mussels with garlic sauce. One sauteed season chinese vegetable dish to comliment all the other orders.

I hear this establishment serves shark fin soup. Please boycott this restaurant for the sake of a species heavily under threat. Mr Chan obviously doesn't give a damn about oceanic preservation if indeed it is being sold (and as of this time a petition is doing the rounds as to this issue, so I think it indeed the case). Please notify those you know to lend pressure to the cause. It really does effect us all!

the greatness of Mr Chans!!
I have to agree that Mr Chans is by FAR the best chinese in Cape Town. We have been going there for many years now. My favourite are the starters - spicy ribs, salted squid, spring rolls and prawn toast and don't forget about the toffee banana for dessert.

Have to agree with you. Mr Chan is the best Chinese restaurant in Cape Town. We are regulars here always coming back each month to try a new dish. They have to create a new menu soon...just for me :P
